Marina di Ragusa is a perfect base for exploring eastern and southern Sicily. The nearby Baroque cities — Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli — are within easy reach and covered in our [Hyblaean Baroque guide](/guida/barocco-ibleo-ragusa-modica-scicli). But with a little more road, a whole world opens up. This guide covers the longer excursions: those requiring a full day or at least a long morning, but worth every kilometre. ## Noto — 1 hour 15 minutes Noto is the **capital of Sicilian Baroque**. Completely destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, it was rebuilt from scratch on a new site a few kilometres from the old — a unique case of a city entirely designed in Baroque style. The result is an urban mise-en-scène without equal: straight streets, theatrical piazzas, churches and palazzi in golden limestone aligned along an east-west axis that exploits sunlight like a director. ### Not to miss - **Corso Vittorio Emanuele**: the main artery, a succession of masterpieces. At sunset, when the stone glows orange, it is unforgettable - **Cathedral of San Nicolò**: Noto's symbol, restored after the dome collapsed in 1996 - **Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata**: the famous balconies with sculpted corbels — sirens, winged horses, lions, putti. The very icon of Sicilian Baroque - **The Infiorata**: every third weekend of May, Via Nicolaci transforms into a carpet of mosaics made from flower petals ### Combine with The **Vendicari Reserve** (20 minutes from Noto): one of Sicily's most beautiful beaches — wild, with flamingos and abandoned tuna fisheries. Perfect for ending the day with a swim. ### Info - Distance: 90 km, about 1h 15min by car - Recommended duration: full day - Best period: spring (Infiorata in May) and autumn ## Syracuse and Ortigia — 1 hour 30 minutes Syracuse was the most powerful city in the Greek world — larger than Athens, richer than Corinth. Today it is a double city: modern Syracuse on the mainland and **Ortigia**, the island-historic-centre connected by a bridge, where 2,700 years of history overlap on a handkerchief of land surrounded by the sea. ### Not to miss - **Ortigia**: the entire island is an open-air museum. Lose yourself among alleys, piazzette and palazzi mixing Greek, Arab, Norman and Baroque - **Syracuse Cathedral**: built inside a 5th-century BC Greek temple. The original Doric columns are still visible, incorporated into the cathedral walls. It is history made architecture - **Fonte Aretusa**: the freshwater spring metres from the sea, where papyrus grows. A mythological site — according to the Greeks, the nymph Arethusa transformed into a spring to escape the river god Alpheus - **Ortigia Market**: the morning market of fish, fruit and street food is a feast for all senses - **Neapolis Archaeological Park**: the Greek Theatre (still used for summer classical performances), the Ear of Dionysius, the Roman amphitheatre ### Info - Distance: 110 km, about 1h 30min by car - Recommended duration: full day - Tip: park outside Ortigia and explore on foot. The island is small and best on foot ## Catania and Mount Etna — 1 hour 45 minutes Catania is the anti-Marina. Chaotic, noisy, volcanic in every sense. A city built on lava, destroyed and rebuilt seven times, living with an energy you will not find anywhere else in Sicily. ### Catania city - **Piazza del Duomo**: with the Liotru (the lava elephant) and the Cathedral of Sant'Agata - **La Pescheria**: Italy's most theatrical fish market. Voices, colours, smells — an open-air theatre. Best in the morning (closes around 1:00 PM) - **Via Etnea**: the main artery pointing straight at Mount Etna. Shopping, bars, Baroque palazzi - **Benedictine Monastery**: one of Europe's largest monasteries, now a university campus. Guided tours available ### Mount Etna **Mount Etna** is Europe's tallest active volcano (about 3,350 m — it changes with every eruption). From Catania, Rifugio Sapienza at 1,900 m is reached in about 45 minutes. From there: - **Cable car + jeep**: to 2,900 m, with compulsory alpine guide to approach the summit craters (about €65-70) - **Free hiking**: trails around the Silvestri craters (1,900 m) and old crater zones. Free, spectacular, suitable for everyone - **Etna wineries**: the volcano's northern slopes host some of Sicily's most interesting wineries (Nerello Mascalese, Carricante). Tastings by appointment ### Info - Distance: 130 km to Catania, 170 km to Rifugio Sapienza - Duration: full day (Catania city + Etna is too much: choose one) - Tip: for Etna, leave early. Afternoon clouds can block the view ## Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples — 2 hours 30 minutes It is the longest trip from Marina, but if you have a free day and love ancient history, nothing in Sicily compares. The **Valley of the Temples** is the best-preserved Greek archaeological site outside Greece. Seven Doric temples built between the 6th and 5th centuries BC line a rocky ridge with the sea as backdrop. The **Temple of Concordia** is in a state of preservation that seems impossible for a 2,500-year-old building. ### Info - Distance: 170 km, about 2h 30min by car - Duration: full day (the park visit takes at least 2-3 hours) - Tip: visit in the early morning or late afternoon. Sunset light on the temples is one of Sicily's most beautiful spectacles ## Caltagirone — 1 hour 15 minutes The **city of ceramics** is another of the eight UNESCO Val di Noto cities. Its fame is tied to centuries of polychrome ceramic production — and to the famous **Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte**: 142 steps decorated with hand-painted majolica tiles, each one different. Caltagirone is less touristy than the other Baroque cities and has a more intimate atmosphere. The ceramic workshops along the centre's streets offer unique pieces, from decorated plates to Teste di Moro (the iconic Sicilian head-shaped planters). ### Info - Distance: 85 km, about 1h 15min by car - Duration: half day - Combine with: a trip to Piazza Armerina and the Roman mosaics of Villa del Casale (30 min from Caltagirone) ## General tips for excursions - **Leave early**: the Sicilian heat is serious, especially in July and August. Departing at 7:30-8:00 lets you visit in the cool hours and return for the afternoon beach - **Hire car**: the most convenient option. Sicilian roads are good; traffic is manageable outside cities - **Water and hat**: always, everywhere, in any season - **Lunch**: plan lunch as part of the experience. Every city has its speciality: chocolate in Modica, granita in Catania, fish in Ortigia - **Don't do everything**: one trip done well is better than three done in a rush. Choose based on your interests and enjoy the journey --- > *Sicily cannot be exhausted by a beach. From Marina di Ragusa, in a few hours' drive, you cross three thousand years of history — from Greek temples to Baroque palaces, from Arab markets to the volcano's craters. Every day can be a journey through time.*
